Celebrating the Sixth PlaceKeepers Cohort: Building Leaders, Preserving Legacy

Updated: Nov 20

At NEOKCR, we believe that community transformation starts with the people who live, work, and care deeply about their neighborhoods. That’s the spirit behind PlaceKeepers—our leadership development program that equips residents with the tools and knowledge to become stewards of change while honoring the culture and legacy of the Eastside.

This year, we are thrilled to celebrate the graduation of our sixth PlaceKeepers Cohort! These community leaders are not just participants in a program—they are changemakers, advocates, and the heartbeat of a movement focused on thoughtful, intentional development rooted in connection, equity, and resilience.

What is PlaceKeepers?

PlaceKeepers is more than just a leadership program. It’s about ensuring that the Eastside’s future is driven by those who understand its past and love it in the present. The program prepares local leaders to tackle the challenges of community development with knowledge in advocacy, real estate development, policy, and public engagement. It’s a space for building capacity and deepening the relationships that make meaningful change possible.

A New Generation of Stewards

This year's cohort included a dynamic group of individuals committed to preserving and uplifting the culture of the Eastside. They dove into workshops, conversations, and hands-on learning opportunities to explore how real estate, policy, and community planning intersect with people’s lived experiences.

Our PlaceKeepers graduates understand that development is about more than buildings—it’s about people. They leave this program ready to lead projects that ensure the east side remains a place where heritage is honored, culture is celebrated, and opportunity is shared.

A Celebration of Connection and Growth

Throughout the program, participants connected with city leaders, developers, and long-time residents, forging partnerships that will extend far beyond their time in the cohort. They worked through real-world challenges, explored ways to protect their neighborhoods from displacement, and developed strategies to guide equitable development.

We know that these leaders will play a key role in shaping the future of the east side—not just by building new spaces but by fostering connections that strengthen the social fabric of our community.

Looking to the Future

We are immensely proud of this year’s graduates and excited to see the work they will do next. From advocating for affordable housing to creating public art installations, the possibilities are endless. Their passion, vision, and commitment will ensure that the Eastside grows on its own terms—grounded in legacy and guided by the people who call it home.

The PlaceKeepers program is about building leaders for the future, and with every cohort, we are reminded that the future of the Eastside is bright.
